To eliminate the possibility of having frozen pipes, maintain a constant temperature in your home above freezing, and be certain to adequately insulate those pipes that are out in the weather. It is easy for pipes to freeze whenever the mean temperature near the pipes drop below freezing. If you are lucky, you will only experience a minor inconvenience until the pipes thaw. The other option is the pipes may burst, which would result in significant repair costs and a mess to clean up.

Certain foods should not be put into the disposal as they are likely to damage the blades. These include banana, chicken skin, gourds and carrots. Sift your food for difficultly-ground materials like these so you can throw them away, then put the rest of your food down the disposal.

If you notice water dripping into the walls of your home, you should immediately turn off the water supply and contact a plumber. This type of leak is not something to play around with, as it can cause numerous serious problems. Many initially small problems can lead to hazardous mold, mildew or flooding.

Only pay pay the plumber once the job is done. You may be required to put some money down before a job is started, but never pay the total cost until you know the job has been completed correctly. You need to know the plumber did what he promised before he is reimbursed for the entire amount.

Immediately turn off the water supply to your water heater using the shut-off valve if you notice any water on the ground around the base of the tank. If you neglect to shut off the water, one small leak could become a much bigger leak, which will be much harder to stop.

If you discover a pipe has frozen, open a tap on the line to allow the thawing ice to drain. This will help relieve pressure in pipes to prevent them from bursting, which may prevent bigger damage for your home.

You may find types that are specific to galvanized steel or threaded plastics, making sure the connection is tight enough. Plumbing stores or even big box home stores will carry both products and can also offer you advice.

Before hiring a plumber, check their credentials against the local licensing agency or municipal authority. You can verify that their required licensing is current, and see if anyone has filed any complaints. If a contractor’s license has expired or isn’t in good standing, you don’t want to hire that contractor.

Don’t wait until the problem is here to educate yourself. Some routine maintenance can stop problems from starting, to begin with. Keep these tips handy so you’ll be prepared for any future plumbing need.

.
